Groundwater Remediation – Bulk Fuel Terminal

The Challenge:

Remediate a bulk fuel terminal that has operated since World War II. Groundwater was discovered to be impacted over an area of 5+ acres, including numerous off-site residential properties. The petroleum contamination existed as free-phase floating gasoline (over 2 acres) and as dissolved compounds in saturated soils and fractured bedrock aquifers.

Our Solution:

EnviroSouth installed a fixed high-vacuum extraction system in the area of free-phase gasoline. This resulted in the rapid removal of all floating gasoline in less than 18 months. Dissolved compounds in the soil and bedrock aquifers were treated with a multi-level air sparging system which allowed on-site air stripping and anaerobic bioremediation to eliminate 99% of the dissolved concentrations with no disruption of terminal operations.

What's Unique:

Cost savings were achieved by using computer-controlled timers that automatically alternated air-flow among 45 vacuum remediation wells and 42 air sparging wells. Constant monitoring of groundwater data allowed EnviroSouth’s environmental professionals to adjust air flow rates and increase the number of remediation wells in slow-responding areas for an aggressive pursuit of project closure.

EnviroSouth’s cost effective and aggressive remediation approach has also resulted in “No Further Action” status on bulk fuel terminals in Charlotte, North Carolina and Columbus, Georgia.
