Groundwater Remediation – Medical Products Manufacturing Plant
The Challenge:
Rapidly remove diesel fuel floating atop the groundwater in an area on the plant which is underlain by a dense network of electrical, natural gas, and cooling water utility lines. Prior to EnviroSouth’s involvement, diesel fuel remediation was being performed for 8+ years by another consulting firm using passive recovery pumps with minimal effect.
Our Solution:
EnviroSouth performed a detailed subsurface assessment of the diesel fuel plume using laser-induced fluorescence. This provided a 3-dimensional view of the distribution of free-floating fuel. Using the assessment data, EnviroSouth designed an effective remediation system using high-vacuum recovery wells. Within the first 10 months of operation, vacuum-recoverable fuel was eliminated from all wells. Following injection of a petroleum desorbing chemical, residual fuel will be extracted through the vacuum recovery wells. Remediation is expected to be complete within 18 months after system start-up.
What's Unique:
The use of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology allowed the optimal placement of recovery wells. The LIF data also allowed recovery well screens to be placed only at the contaminated depth intervals, ensuring maximum effectiveness. A significant cost savings was realized by our client by discharging treated groundwater into an on-site infiltration gallery that was designed and installed by EnviroSouth.
